Wellness Weekly Round Up: Caribbean devastation, US Spa Industry Records & More

Wellness Weekly Round-up

Each week we pull together our top articles on the latest in the spa and wellness industry.

HURRICANE DEVASTATION

Just a week after Hurricane Irma battered the Caribbean, Hurricane Maria has further devastated an already suffering region.  According to daily updates from Caribbean Journal, the storm is now racing towards Turks & Caicos after leaving mass destruction on many islands, particularly in Dominica and Puerto Rico.  Our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected by these storms, including our dear friends and clients at Rosalie Bay in Dominica.

US SPA INDUSTRY SETS NEW RECORD

In much more positive industry news, a new report from Spa Business Magazine reports that the industry in the United States has set a new record in number of spa visits — this figure, according to the International Spa Association (ISPA) is estimated to have increased to 184 million visits in 2016, up 2.5% from 2015. This increase in visits is also reflected in the now $16.3bn dollar US spa industry total revenue figure.  We love to see this strong industry growth (The Wellhouse Spa at Blackberry Farm in Tennessee is pictured below).

SPA OF UNCONSCIOUS DESIRES

At the always cutting edge London Design Festival the spa inside the Mondrian Hotel will play host to a series of unconvential treatments and experiences designed by Bompas & Parr. In this article from Dezeen, the concept of the one-night-only event is to push guests outside of their comfort zone and create new ideas of what is traditional offered in spa treatments.  We love any initiative that truly thinks outside of the box!

IS WELLNESS HURTING THE SPA ENVIRONMENT?

This is the question that spa industry insider Trent Munday is asking in this progressive read.  In clear, direct words, Munday states that "wellness is a concept, spa is a building". Given the prevalence of the $3.7 trillion dollar wellness industry, this is a poignant discussion.  We agree that wellness is so much more than a trip to the spa — its a lifestyle movement, and something that we believe belongs beyond the four walls of the spa.  Click here to read more about our spa and wellness philosphies.
